Picture above: The entire school gathers every morning to begin the day with morning prayer. On Fridays, during October, we pray the rosary together in prayerful observation of the Marian month.

This year we introduced a new program throughout the school, Education in Virtue. The program was created by the Dominican Sisters of Mary Mother of the Eucharist. They are a teaching order with a mother house and school in Ann Arbor, Michigan and a mission house in Georgetown, Texas.

This program extends from what we focused on last year, Saints in the Making. It is based on Theological Virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity and the Cardinal Virtues of Justice, Prudence, Temperance, and Fortitude. We are concentrating this year on learning what the virtues mean and examples of what they look and sound like. We watch videos every Monday that introduce the virtue, there are visuals throughout the school and classrooms that explain the virtue, and we continue to talk about them everyday at morning prayer.

Bishop Aviles' Visit

Bishop Mario Aviles was able to celebrate our first Mass of the 23-24 school year. He even visited each classroom and blessed everyone. We thank him for his leadership of the Diocese of Brownsville and taking time to help us start our school year with Christ at the center.

On September 15th, the Hispanic culture was represented well by all classes with bright, colorful shirts, dresses and bows.

Open House

September 14th, we welcomed all the parents to their child's classroom so they can see firsthand the wonderful work our students are doing.

"Spooky" Art Class
-
Mrs. Holder taught every grade how to draw a skeleton this week in art class. Students learned the shapes of different bones in our bodies and how they work together to help us do everyday activities. Thank you Mrs. Holder for including science in art class in an interesting way.
We can't wait to see what Halloween art projects are in store the rest of the month.

Eagle Nest (18 month - 3 yr old)

Sr. Carissa Kulpa and her staff of loving, patient teachers are doing wonderful things at the Eagle Nest. They model kindness and faithfulness while teaching them colors, shapes, letters and how to discover and love the world around them and what God has given us.

Montessori (3 yr old - 4 yr old)

Montessori is full of busy and eager minds. Ms. Gonzalez helps them learn Montessori procedures from day one. By the end of the first week all students are:
1. Choosing their work,
2. Completing all their work

Montessori always remembers to celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day. I am pretty sure the tally chart they made still shows the red delicious apple is a Montessori favorite.

Kindergarten
-
All the Kindergarteners are so excited to learn new things. They have been working on writing all their letters and numbers and learning about plants like apples and pumpkins.

Mrs. Garcia guided Kindergarten through an exploration of the science of an apple on Johnny Appleseed Day. They taste tested apples, made apple volcanoes, and prepared their own applesauce.
They are looking forward to visiting the Alpaca Ranch next week too.

1st grade

Ms. K Gonzalez has been doing some really neat and engaging activities with first grade this year. They have been enjoying everything so much they may not even realize they are also learning.

2nd grade

Mrs. Gracia's 2nd grade has been doing a lot of reading and writing so far this year. Here they are reading during one of their weekly library visits. The other pictures are of them combining 2 sentences to create a compound sentence during a class activity.

3rd grade

Mrs. Nowak's 3rd grade has been very busy this year sharpening their math skills in adding, subtracting and multiplying. They were able to demonstrate these skills during a great week of Iowa testing.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday 3rd grade attend Mrs. Labeau's music class with 4th grade where they all practice singing Mass songs. They have also already started preparation for our annual Christmas program.

4th grade

Mrs. Hilsenbeck and Mr. Dimas keep learning fun too with a variety of game based activities in English, Math, Science and Social Studies.

Fourth graders are feeling more mature this year as they have moved to the upper elementary section of the building. They like leading school at weekly Mass and having lively discussions about their ideas on the stories they read in class.

5th grade

5th grade has completed several projects this year as they have studied about a variety of topics in reading, science and social studies. Here you see them with the windmills they made after they read Winds of Hope.

Their lastest project was the Plural Noun Carnival where they created a game for their classmates to play to practice making plural nouns.

6th grade
-
We are so excited to have 6th grade back on our campus this year. This group of students have shown great leadership through their respectful behavior, hard work and positive attitudes.
Here they are helping Kindergarten work on counting and number sense. -

The 6th graders are also raising funds for their annual class trip to Camp Eagle in May by offering "Snack Shack" at the end of the school day on 2 Fridays of the month.

Spread the Word

This is a free event open to the public. Each class will set up a "booth" with a game or activity and give candy to the participants. We have moved into the gym this year so the wind, rain or heat does not effect our festivities.
